Before you go…
Before you jump headfirst into a new city, make sure you have your ducks in a row. Here’s a checklist of what you need to find before you go:
- A new job
- A new doctor
- Childcare – if you have children
- Pet sitters – if you have pets
- Your kids new school
- Sublet opportunities
- Driver’s license for that state – if you have your own vehicle.
- Consider hiring a moving company – but only ship the essentials, remember a moving company can be expensive, so keep it within budget.
- Consider donating old stuff you have no need for.
- Consider how you will transfer your pets in the least stressful way – normally, this would be easier if you drive your pets into your new home. Remember, pets are family, so do not leave them behind.
- Inform your bank and your creditors about the move
- Compile a list of your medical records, dental records, bank records, insurance, license, and keep them in a safe storage, keep them with you when you move.
On the go…
Once you’re ready to hit the road, here’s a checklist of all the things you need to do:
- Move your priceless stuff yourself – this includes bank records, medical records, costly items that you are worried will break or be lost during your move.
- Drive your family and pets – don’t leave your pets’ fate to your movers, it is best to keep them with you during your move.
- Label every box with its destination and content
- Ask your friends and family to help you unpack – leave the shipping to your movers.
- Pack the essentials – foods, pets needs, water, board games, to make your move more fun and easier
