A Short Home Maintenance List for This Coming Fall Season

Summer season is at its peak and a few weeks later, the temperature will cool down to signal the start of the fall season. The summer season is the time you get to enjoy the merits of staying home for vacation, but when the next season comes in, you’ll need to do some cleaning and maintenance.’

What to Do?

The fall season is a transition from the hot months towards the colder months. Thus, during this period, you need to mentally prepare yourself for an increase in workload because doing it, later on, would be then too cold. When doing home maintenance around this time, the exterior of the house tends to get more focus than the inside. Here are some tasks that people do in autumn:

Plant seedlings

The temperature during the previous season may have been too extreme which wasn’t recommended to bring in new plants to your home garden. Thus, the autumn season is a good time for planting seeds or shrubs to reconstruct the garden. Furthermore, you’ll get to see their full bloom in early spring.

Sweeping and Raking

The first thought that comes in when we think of fall is the abundance of leaves on the ground. The fall season is the time when the trees shed their leaves in preparation for the winter before going dormant. Thus, prepare your brooms and rakes and mowers as you will be getting rid of those beds of red leaves almost every other day.

Check Your Chimney

The chimney is a part of the house where smoke billows to the outside. Some accumulation may have remained from the previous usage, and they should be cleaned now so that the excess won’t come falling down your furnace.

Clean the Gutters and the Roof

The gutters are to be cleaned from leaves and other debris. Also, if there are any holes, they should be blocked or repaired before the fall season ends.

Pruning Trees

This task is to be done in late fall. Pruning to a specific height (usually 3 feet) or lesser to your roof height will prevent damage to your house when the winter brings in harsh winds.

Drain Water

Just before the fall season ends, drain all machine systems you have so that there’s no way that the water stored would freeze which would also increase repair costs due to cracks and leaks. These include sprinkler systems, drainage, irrigations, etc.

Check Your Heater

It is when the fall season kicks in that you should do an annual checkup for your heater. Doing it in spring or summer is unthinkable because you won’t be using it anytime soon. Heaters are normally used during the winter to compensate for the freezing temperatures. As such, hire a professional to remove any scaling or other particulates that may have settled at the bottom of the heater. Other parts such as the radiators and valves should be checked if they’re still working properly.

Conclusion

One can never be caught off guard when doing home cleaning and maintenance. Through this guide, you should now have an overall idea as to how to prepare yourself for the winter in the next several months.
